Major Sections in Book/Chapter Outlne

Kimme,
I'm brainstorming here. Possible topics for sections of the book might be:

Do we want to focus on teaching writing in higher education only? This is a major decision. What are the pros and cons?

Adult Learning Theory: Excerpts from Published Books and Journals
This will be a bit difficult but doable. It is sort of an introduction to the subject for many of our readers. Can you get a copy of Learning in Adulthood, 3rd edition? You'll get a good summary of a lot of territory in that one book. We can sort through it together and decide what theorists ought to be included and why.

Learning Environments for Adult Writers
Prison Writing Programs
Community College Writing Programs
Adult Degree Programs
PLA Programs (most do not include much writing instruction)
Workplace writing programs

Instructional Approaches Designed Especially for Adult Learners

Curricula Designed for TEaching Writing to Adult Learners

Adult Writers: Case Studies of Actual Adult Undergraduate Writers

Teachers of Adults: Case Studies of Teachers Specializing in Teaching Adults

Graduate Education: Preparing Teachers of Adults (there might not be much on this but we also might be surprised if we look around)

The Future: Increasing Presence of On-Line Courses and Programs for Adult Writing Students
e-books, podcasts, and ???

  1. I think we might want to stay with higher education for now, especially until we see how many books/articles are out there for review. We always can add to the bibliography. For now, we need to get a proposal for Bedford with our categories, and I would like to keep this manageable until we see what is available.

I like your categories as listed below:

Learning Environments for Adult Writers, including these:
    Prison Writing Programs
    Community College Writing Programs
    Adult Degree Programs
PLA Programs (most do not include much writing instruction)
    Workplace writing programs

I don't know how many articles/books focused on adult learners are in the last category, but it might be fun looking. : ) I have a wierd definition of fun, don't I??? : ) Anyway, back to the proposal.... Our Table of Contents would include the introduction written by you and me, with a bit of history about adult learning in higher education (citing the people I mentioned before) and getting a big push from the beginning of the GI Bill. Then we'll have our categories we've been discussing. Do we need to give an estimate of how many books/articles we will have reviewed, or is that part of what Carrie wanted? Should I ask her?
